Description
This scene depicts Piero, the enslaved African miller that operated the Van Cortlandt mills in today’s park. In this scene he is pouring grain into the millstones while his son, Pieter, works in the background. We know of his existence from the wills of Jacobus and Frederick Van Cortlandt.
